This flawless design establishes an effortless flow between home and garden
This project, involved a home extension and the creation of a series of outdoor rooms, delivered just what the homeowners wanted – and more.
The house had no real connection to the rear garden and the slope of the site meant much of the space was unusable. To better unify the home and garden, we extended the house with a kids’ rumpus room that opens to the back of the house. By doing this, and creating level external areas, we were able to encourage greater use of the outdoors.
To further open the rear of the house, we changed sliding doors to concertinaed doors and built a large timber entertaining deck. The deck was set at the same level as the house to create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Half of the deck is undercover for wet-weather entertaining; the other half is shaded, as needed, with a large umbrella.
A Total Concept also incorporated a swimming pool and poolside entertaining area for the children with generous stairs linking the house to pool.
The steeply sloping site meant the project could only be designed with a substantially elevated pool, in direct conflict with council planning codes. We negotiated with council for more than a year to get the project approved in the form our clients desired rather than compromise on a design that would not work as well.
The surrounds of this beautiful contemporary swimming pool are paved in a select grade travertine. The poolside entertaining area has a large downturn to the edge that creates a floating island effect. The pool interior is clad in shimmering translucent deep blue glass tile. So the children can play ball games, the pool has a deep middle and is shallow at both ends.
All components of the design were further linked by our use of a similar planting theme throughout. We adopted an intentionally simple palette of red kangaroo paw, lillypilly, Shore juniper, coast rosemary, liriope, brown flax and agave.
The result is an elegantly simple outdoor design with an easy flow that delivers a total concept and adds immeasurable value to the property.
