This new home built on a partially cleared block in the middle of a Blue Mountains Forest required careful planning to obtain an approval through council. Planting had to be fire tolerant species for the property in a fire zone as did all materials that we selected.
For the front of the property, we selected a grey broom finished concrete for the driveway and front entry path, where immediately adjacent to the home we utilized predominantly fleshy plant species with a high-water content that would be fire retardant if required. Plants such as strelitzia, cordyline, Gymea lily, native hibiscus and liriope were selected to aid in fire retardation.
A fire protection zone was developed at the rear of the property with inclusion of an exotic lawn species and removal of all trees within a 15-metre distance to the home then further out trees were removed to ensure canopies did not touch each other. This then blended back into native forest. Existing natural mulch, ground covers and shrubs were removed all together in these zones to ensure any fires would be retarded at this point.
Planting to the rear was typically with species endemic to the lower Blue Mountains, including waratah, purple flag, banksias, leptospermums, hakea, melaleucas and pea flowers.
The design of the pool itself was reasonably easy, fitting snuggly within a large niche of the house with large windows from the living areas viewing onto the pool plus an infinity edge orientated towards the views of bushland. Within the filter box a fire pump was linked direct to the pool for use if ever needed.
The pool is set parallel to the large timber deck immediately adjacent to the home itself designed for entertaining purposes with numerous large benches and daybeds built into the deck. All timber is a high-quality grade and species that is fires retardant.
The result of the work designed by A Total Concept Landscape Architects has created a relaxed lifestyle and entertaining complex for the owners of this property.
